Religious Seville

One of the hallmarks of the province of Seville that defines and characterises its culture is without a doubt the devotion its people feel for their religious traditions and celebrations. This is especially true of Semana Santa at Easter, which has become a cultural symbol and artistic expression for each and every one of the towns in the province.

During Semana Santa, the province’s streets are transformed into authentic open-air museums. This is the perfect time to get to know the architectural wealth in our towns and cities, and to see images and collections of sculptures of great artistic value, as well as works of gold and silver and wooden carvings, displayed in processions on the streets.

This fiesta is of such interest and importance in the province that many of the local versions have been declared as being Fiestas Of Tourist Interest, as in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Carmona, Marchena, Coria del Río, Guadalcanal, etc.

Over these days you can also attend events of great artistic and cultural interest that give a personal touch to certain towns and their Semana Santa. This is the case of the beautiful Vía Crucis del Aljarafe around the Roman city of Itálica in Santiponce, and the "Quemá del Judás" on the Sunday of the Resurrection in Coripe.

This is also the time to try the gastronomic delights made for the occasion, such as potaje de cuaresma ("Lent Stew"), cod in its many recipes, tomato soup and spinach with chick peas, as well as sweets such as torrijas (sweet fried bread), pestiños (honey-coated pastry) and convent confectionery.

All year round, displays of a religious character also take place that are of great cultural interest, such as the Romería de Torrijos local pilgrimage in Valencina de la Concepción and the Romería de Nuestra Señora de Valme local pilgrimage in Dos Hermanas, some of which have also been declared as being of Tourist Interest.
