Semana Santa Estepa

Seville enchants

The Chapel, built between the late 19th century and early 20th century, is located in the village of La Alcornocosa, about 6 km from El Castillo de las Guardas. The festivities in honour of Saint Anthony of Padova take place here in July. The procession of Saint Anthony takes place after the Mass in the Shrine, located in this beautiful enclave surrounded by nature.

This building has a single nave with transversal arches. Hernández Díaz has dated the structure to the first third of the 14th century based on the semi-circular shape of the apse, the moulding on the presbytery’s toral arch and the entranceways.

The Shrine was built in honour of Our Lady of Carmen.

This newly-built Carmelite Shrine is located in the Romero Compound a few kilometres from the town.

The image of Our Lady of Carmen, attributed to the sculptor Sebastián Santos, is housed in the Shrine during the pilgrimage.

The temple is somewhat removed from the town’s walled historic quarters. When it was built in the 15th century, it was meant to be a shrine to the Archangel St Michael.

Although it has a core area that is Mudejar, it has undergone multiple renovations, especially in the 18th century, when the choir’s side chapels were added.

The Shrine to Our Lady of the Rosary was opened in 1992. It was initially owned by the Town Hall of El Cuervo, but has since been transferred to the Confraternity of the Santísimo Cristo del Amor y del Amparo as a place to worship the patron saint.

Of uncertain origin, the Shrine to Santa Ana brings together the faithful of La Coracha neighbourhood. Available literature shows the building was built in the second half of the 18th century. The portal was added in 1840.

During the Muslim period, the Shrine was a mosque located in the highest part of the town and oriented towards the Mecca. It was customary for churches to be built over former mosques. The present temple dates back to the 16th century and originally consisted of a single nave. Another nave was later built on the Epistle side of the Shrine.
