Virgen de los Dolores Church

This late 18th-century church is dedicated to Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. It also ecclesiastically depends on the parish of Our Lady of Pure Conception. In 1887, it was also used as a water deposit. Until the Spanish Civil War, it was used as public baths. It then served as a water supply station for irrigation purposes.

In the early 18th century, the Hermandad del Rosario, which was originally established in the parish church of Santa María, went into decline, which it overcame thanks to the efforts of the Venerable Simón el Ermitaño, who died in 1711 and was responsible for the construction of this chapel, dedicated to San Vicente Ferrer.

The ancient 14th century shrine was built in the municipality of Azuaga and Enrique Infante de Aragón, Grand Master of the Order of Santiago, ceded part of the municipality of Azuaga to Guadalcanal on 10 April 1428.

This convent was founded around 1612 by a former resident of the town settled in Potosi (America), who donated 80,000 silver pesos for its construction.

The foundation of the monastery was promoted by Enrique Enriquez, Comendador Mayor of the Order of Santiago of the Province of Leon (maternal uncle of Don Fernando el Católico and grandson of Don Fabrique Enriquez and a Jewess from Guadalcanal nicknamed "La Paloma") and his wife Doña Maria de Luna, on a trip they made to Guadalcanal in 1489.

On the site now occupied by the parish church, the former Muslim fortress of the Almohad period was built, the only remaining feature of which is a small piece of wall, located next to the sanctuary of the church, which has a pointed horseshoe arch framed by an alfiz.

This Church was initially a small shrine dedicated to the True Cross. Following its decline in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, it was used as accommodation for travelling soldiers. Now, it is one of the most outstanding baroque churches in the province.
