Chapel of Cristo de la Veracruz

This small shrine on the outskirts of the town was established in the 15th century by a Franciscan community; however, there is very little data available. Given its location on the outskirts, the Chapel was used as a charity hospital in 1601 during an epidemic.

From the 17th to the 19th century, the Chapel was integrated into a Carmelite convent, which is reflected in the layout of the current building.

In the late 16th century, in 1688, a community of Barefoot Carmelites moved from their convent, in what is now Plaza de la Constitución, to the hospital. They built new monastic facilities and lived there until the confiscation of church properties ordered by Mendizábal in 1853. The Confraternity took over the Chapel in 1920. The renovation works were completed in 1991.

The building has a single-nave plan, with a simple bell gable in the front. Highlights inside include the main altar, a tiled altarpiece, the baptismal font with the Carmelite coat of arms and an arcaded choir from the early 18th century.
The main images of the Chapel are a late Gothic Christ of the True Cross, attributed to the school of Martinez Montañes, Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John.
