This place stands out in the Natura 2000 network in Andalusia due to its special importance for the conservation of riverside habitats, some fish species of the Habitats Directive and, in general, the river ecosystem and its essential function of facilitating connectivity as an ecological corridor.

Over 95% of the Guadalquivir-Middle Section SAC, which covers almost 2,549 ha, is located in the province of Cordoba. The rest is in Jaén and Seville.

The Rio Guadalquivir-Middle Section SAC does not encompass the entire middle section, but rather two different parts of it. The first part or SAC section begins 6 km upstream from the town of Villa del Río and runs until the town of Las Quemadillas. The second part or section begins 200 m from the Huerta de Valdehermoso Stream, in the town of Alameda del Obispo, and ends 3 km downstream from Peñaflor, leaving the area next to Córdoba free.

Peñaflor represents 2.61% of the SAC. In terms of the distribution of the area by municipality, Peñaflor accounts for 66.44 ha.

Flora

As for the vegetation, the landscape bordering the SAC is mainly agricultural, although there are also forestry operations, with few remaining natural vegetation areas. Given the increasing environmental deterioration of riverside vegetation, the first riparian band comprises poplar groves instead of carrs. It is still possible to find a riverside line of Salix alba and/or Tamarix canariensis is the best-preserved sections.

Fauna

The otter features prominently among the typical riparian fauna. There are also some amphibians, reptiles, dragonfly species and a significant number of fish, such as the river blenny.
