Burguillos, the gateway to the Sierra Morena
The beautiful town of Burguillos sits on the foothills of Sierra Morena, in the Vega del Guadalquivir. It is a town of Visigoth origin with a deep-rooted agricultural tradition. Given its proximity to the city of Seville, it has become a dormitory town in recent years.
Burguillos has a wide variety of natural landscapes, where hiking or other outdoor sports may be practised. A peaceful town where you can enjoy nature. The specialities of the local cuisine are small game dishes, asparagus and stews. Be sure to try the partridge rice; you will love it.
Its historical heritage consists of the San Cristóbal Mártir Church, home to the patron saint of Burguillos, whose festival is celebrated in July. There is also the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of the Rosary that takes place at La Madroña Park, a protected area of stunning beauty.

Getting to Burguillos
To get to Burguillos by car, the best route is via the A-8009 motorway. Then enter the A-8002 and continue until the A-8013. Continue along this motorway until Burguillos.
The town does not have a train station. However, you can travel there by bus. The Damas Company regularly runs buses from Plaza de Armas Bus Station in Seville that stop at Burguillos.
Getting around
Stroll through the streets, go hiking or cycling and enjoy the different routes. Some routes are also suitable for horse riding.
Reasons to visit
- Visit the Mudejar-style San Cristóbal Mártir Church, the main temple. Do not miss the coffered ceiling and baroque works inside.
- Experience the Pilgrimage of Our Lady of the Rosary that takes place in August in La Madroña Park. The Shrine is located in this protected area.
- Go to the privately-owned, former flour mill and discover its history.
- Stroll through Plaza de la Constitución Española and sample the town’s delicious cuisine at a local bar.
- Do you want to breathe some fresh air? Take a walk along one of the four easy routes available in the natural surroundings.
What to see
Start your visit at the Plaza de la Constitución Española, the town centre. You will see the Town Hall and various bars where you can have a snack. Then, walk along Calle Real until you reach the San Cristóbal Mártir Church. This temple differs from others in that it has a steeple instead of a tower. Inside are baroque artworks and a Mudejar coffered ceiling of great artistic value.
A few metres ahead, on Calle La Fuente, is an 18th-century flour mill, a true symbol of this town. However, as it is privately owned, visits are not allowed.
Last but not least, venture up to La Madroña Park. It will only take 10 minutes if you go by car. If you decide to hike up, it will take about 50 minutes. At the top is the Shrine to the Virgen del Rosario, where the eagerly awaited Burguillos pilgrimage takes place every October.

Surroundings
Burguillos is about 25 kilometres from Seville, in the Guadalquivir-Doñana tourist region. The farmlands in the south are given to cereal and cotton crops. The land to the north, near the first foothills of the Sierra Morena Sevillana, is used for extensive livestock farming and hunting. La Madroña Natural Park is in the latter area.
