Cazalla de la Sierra, the beauty of northern Seville

Cazalla de la Sierra will surprise you with its contrasts: the whiteness of its houses, the green of its mountains and the crystal-clear blue of the River Huéznar. It is an ideal place for unwinding and strolling through the heart of Sierra Morena de Sevilla Natural Park. In addition to its rich heritage, its anise and cherry liqueur have made it famous since the 15th century. The latter is so popular that, in many places, people still simply call it Cazalla. King Felipe V even made it the capital of Spain during the summer of 1730.

There is an endless number of reasons to visit Cazalla de la Sierra. One of which is its cuisine based on game meat, Ibérico pork and local wild mushrooms. Enjoy the fresh air of the Sierra while sampling a delicious homemade dish, accompanied by wine or typical local liqueurs. The pilgrimage of Our Lady of the Mountain, the patron saint of Cazalla de la Sierra takes place in August.

Getting to Cazalla de la Sierra

By car, take the A-8006 road from Seville and pass through Alcalá del Río and Villaverde del Río. Then, take the A-436 road until Cantillana and then the A-432 to Cazalla, passing through El Pedroso.

By bus, Linesur has a regular service from Seville’s Plaza de Armas Bus Station.

The train that connects Seville with Mérida has various stops in Seville’s Sierra Morena, including Cazalla and Constantina.

Getting around

Discover this heaven on earth while hiking the routes in Seville’s Sierra Morena. You can also rent mountain bikes and cycle along the Greenway. If architectural tourism is your thing, strolling through its streets is a pleasure.

Reasons to visit

Experience a magical night admiring the magnificent starry sky from the Cartuja de Cazalla, a former monastery converted into a hotel and declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
Discover its wineries and vineyards, as well as the historical distilleries that produce Cazalla anise and cherry liqueur: El Clavel and Miura.
Enjoy climbing, canyoning and mountain biking in the Sierra Morena Natural Park.
In August, enjoy the town’s main festival, the pilgrimage of Our Lady of the Mountain, which lasts for three days. It takes place immediately before the weeklong fair begins.
If you like hunting, a major national event takes place in September: the Concentración de Rehalas de la Sierra Morena.
Enjoy kayaking in the Cazalla or El Pintado reservoir, or fish for carp.
Do not forget to try the local meats, cured meats and wild mushrooms found in Cazalla de la Sierra. These products can also be bought in the town’s Plaza de Abastos market.

What to see

Cazalla de la Sierra’s rich heritage, along with the beautiful natural landscape, will make your visit unforgettable. Wander along its pristine streets lined with white houses and elegant homes until you reach the Plaza Mayor. Visit the Consolación Parish Church and see the imprint of different cultures on this church. This place of worship was built alongside an Almohad wall. The Tourist Office, on the same square, offers additional information.

Continue your walk through the whitewashed streets and see the many refurbished churches that are now used for different purposes. This is the case of San Benito, today a four-star hotel. The former San Francisco Monastery has also been restored, and its cloister is home to the Plaza de Abastos market. Santa Clara Convent is used as an educational centre, and San Andrés Monastery is now the Town Hall.

However, if there is a genuinely daunting monument -today a magnificent hotel- that is the Cartuja Monastery on the outskirts of town. It can be reached by car, or on foot following a well-signposted path. The Shrine of la Virgen del Monte, also near Cazalla, is worth the visit as is the beautiful landscape.

After the visit to the town, you can lose yourself in the Natural Park walking along the Las Laderas path, climb down to the River Huéznar, stroll through the Molino del Corcho Route... A delight for nature lovers and outdoor sports fans.
