Pruna, a rural destination in the Sierra Sur

Pruna, in Seville’s Sierra Sur, is an ideal destination for rural tourism. Highlights include the hilltop castle, Castillo de Hierro that protected the town in the past. It also boasts lovely streets lined with whitewashed houses and the San Antonio Abad Church that is exceptionally beautiful.

Experience the tranquillity of this charming town on the foothills of the Sierra del Tablón. Breathe its fresh air as you walk its many routes. Enjoy stunning views from the Puerto de la Ventana viewpoint, a unique spot in the Sierra Sur. Explore the town’s natural springs while you head towards the 30-metre-high La Cascada waterfall, located one kilometre from the town.

Pruna also offers excellent cuisine made with olive oil from the local cooperative. The most popular dish is the moraga de pimientos. After the meal, locals enjoy a shot of anís or pacharán, both local artisanal products. The most traditional sweets are rosco de San Antón and torta de bellota.

Experience the eagerly awaited Pilgrimage of the Inmaculada Concepción in May. The same can be said of the Feria de Agosto and the ‘Villa de Pruna’ Flamenco Festival.

Getting to Pruna

If you travel by car from Seville, take the A-92 motorway until exit 41. Continue on the A-8125 towards Morón de la Frontera and when you reach this town, take the A-406 that links with the A-363. You will arrive at your destination soon after.

This town does not have a train station, but you can go by bus from the Prado de San Sebastián Bus Station in Seville. Take the bus lines to Morón de la Frontera that stop in Pruna.

What to see

Start your visit at the Plaza de la Libertad, where the San Antonio Abad Church stands. The decorative painting on the dome of this 17th-century temple is stunning.

Make your way up the hill to visit the remains of the Castillo de Hierro, declared a Site of Cultural Interest. The access to this monument is located one kilometre from the town on the A-363 Olvera-Pruna motorway, just before the Fuente del Pilarillo. This natural spring is another historical monument. According to tradition, its water rises from a spring under the castle.

There are other natural springs within Pruna’s municipal district, each with its own story. For instance, the Fuente del Molino Cegato, near the Finca de La Laina and Salado Stream, is famous for its healing waters. The Fuente del Duque, located on the road to Algámitas, owes its name to the Duke of Osuna, lord of these lands.

The Shrine to the Pura y Limpia Concepción, better known as the Shrine to El Navazo, is also in this area. It was built in 1968 to harbour the Virgen Inmaculada during the Pilgrimage. This festivity is eagerly awaited by the people of Pruna.

Discover Pruna’s natural surroundings, either on foot or by bike. The 30-metre-high La Cascada waterfall is one kilometre from the town. Visit El Pilar Lejos, used in the past for washing clothes and as a drinking trough for animals. Another charming place is Los Nacimientos, whose water is used to irrigate market gardens. Its water flows through a remarkably well preserved aqueduct.

To finish your nature route in this beautiful Sierra Sur town, take in some unique views of this region from the Puerto de la Ventana viewpoint.
