Villanueva de San Juan

In the Tertiary period, the area where the town is located was occupied by large lakes or perhaps completely covered by the sea. The archaeological remains discovered suggest that the area was inhabited in the Palaeolithic period. At the Laina site, artefacts from the Roman period have been found, and in the late medieval period the area was part of the bordering Moorish Band. Among its most interesting buildings are the parish church of San Juan Bautista and the Seis Ojos (six-eyed) and Solana bridges.

El Saucejo

After following the River Corbones, you come to the foot of the Serranía Penibética mountain range, where the town of El Saucejo stands. Its main monument is the parish church of San Marcos (with an interesting Baroque altarpiece), but other interesting sites are the chapel of San José in Navarredonda, the Fuente del Moro in the village of Mezquitilla, the San Pedro estate, and the Ibero-Roman site of Los Baldíos.
