Holy Week

Since the year 2000, Guadalcanal can boast about having its Holy Week declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia, the only one with this distinction in the whole of the Sierra Norte of Seville.

Several days prior to Holy Week the residents of Guadalcanal begin the preparations for this traditional event, which has been celebrated since the 16th century. Most of the brotherhoods have their canonical headquarters in the Santa María de la Asunción parish church and from there they parade through the main streets of the town.

The important days begin on Maundy Thursday, when the Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Lord are evoked. During the festival we can admire the carvings of important sculptors such as Antonio Castillo Lastrucci, who made, among others, the images of the Hermandad de la Vera-Cruz; and Antonio Illanes, whose chisel produced the carving of the Virgen de la Amargura. At the end of the week, the procession of the Santo Sepulcro, the Hermandad del Santo Entierro and the Virgen de la Soledad are of exceptional beauty.
