San Isidro Labrador Pilgrimage

809
2

Declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia in 1998, the pilgrimage is one of the most important in the province of Seville. The first one was celebrated in the La Romera estate in 1962. In recent years the influx of pilgrims has become massive, with more than 12,000 people in addition to half a thousand riders, trailers, horse-drawn carriages and about thirty carts pulled by mule teams.

In 1973 the festival moved to the Sierra de San Pablo, a beautiful spot with an abundance of pine trees offering pleasant shade to the pilgrims and the scent of thyme and rosemary.

The pilgrimage takes place on the nearest Sunday to 15 May in honour of San Isidro, whose image is carried on a silver cart pulled by mules.
