Antigua Cárcel Real

It was located on Sierpes street and its origin dates back to the Repartition of Seville after the Reconquest of the Town by Ferdinand III in the 13th century. Where the current Entrecárceles tavern is located, there were cells where Miguel de Cervantes spent some time. He was a prisoner and, according to the story, the most important novel in Hispanic literature, Don Quixote de la Mancha, began to be written within the walls of this prison.

This prison also locked up other famous figures of the Spanish Golden Age such as Mateo Alemán, Alonso Cano, Martínez Montañés and Bartolomé Morel. The prison was demolished in the 19th century and since then it has had various uses and owners.

A slab from 1905 and a ceramic plate from 1984 recall the history of the Cárcel Real, while there is also a tribute to Cervantes in the form of a statue at the back.
