Church of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene

The single-nave church of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene was built in the late 20th century. It has galleries in the side and back of the upper level supported by tall columns.

The Mudejar coffered ceiling of the church and Sacristy is a work of the sculptor Miguel Farse. The images of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene and Our Lady of Sorrows, highly revered in La Algaba, stand on the baroque altar. They are carried in procession on the night of Good Friday, known as the “madrugá”. The moment when the floats leave the church to march in the procession is a must-see because the float with the image of Christ crosses walks out the temple’s door to the music of a “saeta” called “Plegaria”.

The sculpture of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene has not only sentimental value but also artistic; it is one of the jewels of the province of Seville. The image is attributed to the studio of Luisa Roldán, known as La Roldana, and was completed in 1685. Due to the image’s similarity with Seville’s Virgen de la Esperanza Macarena, many historians argue that both sculptures were made by the same sculptor.

Nowadays, the Lord of La Algaba marches in procession on a baroque-style float built in 1958 by Antonio Martín and gilded by Antonio Martínez. Interestingly, the float is graced with black and white cherubs that alternate between each other. Both the angels and archangels were sculpted by Augusto Morilla in 1987.
