Commendador Fountain

This fountain was formerly known as the “Old Fountain”.

It is located on the old road connecting Alcolea del Río with Constantina, to the north of the town’s cemetery. The octagonal Roman structure was built with stone blocks. The archaeologist Ponsich unearthed fragments of Roman tiles and bricks near the fountain.

The fountain had been perfectly preserved until the 1920s. It consists of a circular stone enclosure with a bench seat inside. The low wall with the spout has a carved stone frontispiece crowned by pieces of white marble with inscriptions. The water flows from the spout into a watering trough for livestock. The path to the fountain was quite busy in the past as it was on the old road to Constantina.
