Lope de Vega Theatre

It is located on Avenida de María Luisa. It was built in 1929. On the occasion of the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville (1929), it was decided to build what was to be known as the Seville Pavilion, which was made up of two elements that were simultaneously connected: The Casino and the Exhibition Theatre. The part of the great hall with the dome corresponds to what was the Casino of the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville and today is used as the theatre's hall of honour.

Its architect, Vicente Traver, made the main venue for the Ibero-American Exhibition. The theatre covered an area of 4600 m² and could accommodate 1,100 spectators.

On 28 October 1929 the theatre was visited by the King and Queen of Spain, Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia, who attended the zarzuela entitled El huésped del sevillano.

It was around this time that the Álvarez Quintero Brothers' comedy, Los duendes de Sevilla, premiered.

Its architecture is Neo-Baroque, and the building is faithful to this style both in its ensemble and in its garnishments. Stage box, seats, stalls, boxes, amphitheatre and paradise provide the theatre with spectacular beauty.

On 11 April 1936 it became the Lope de Vega Municipal Theatre, leaving behind its former name of Teatro de la Exposición...

From 1960 onwards, the theatre gained certain relevance due to the boost given to it by independent companies such as Gorca Pequeño Teatro, Tabanque, etc. The theatre was ceded (until 1985) to the Ministry of Culture and once again underwent a major boost, becoming the Lope de Vega National Theatre of Seville (1977).

When the Theatre came back to the Seville Town Council (1985), the need for a comprehensive reform was detected and the work was managed by the Sevillian architect Víctor Pérez Escolano.

Once the renovation was completed, the Lope de Vega Municipal Theatre was reopened on 21 February 1988. It currently offers an extremely varied programme, offering plays, classical or early music concerts (the most prestigious Early Music Festival in Spain), jazz, new age, flamenco, copla.... With more than 180 performances per season and more than 100,000 spectators every year, it is today one of the most representative cultural spaces in Seville.
