San Francisco Monastery

The San Francisco monastery was founded by Diego de Torres, M. A., Professor of Salamanca University, and was paid for by the people through donations. For some time, it was named San Diego in honour of its founder.

The San Francisco Monastery, popularly known as the Los Diezmos monastery, is one of the most important historical-artistic monuments in Cazalla. Founded in 1588, after its disentailment in the 19th century, it has undergone numerous transformations, its old premises being separated for different purposes - a liquor factory, storerooms, a market place, etc. - although fortunately it has preserved its original appearance to a great extent. The church, cloister, chapel-hospital and courtyard have survived to the present day in a good state of conservation, which has allowed the town to recover this historic site for cultural and social use.

The Cultural Centre comprises several areas:

  • Visitors' Reception Area, where information is provided about the municipality and the Sierra Morena Natural Park.
  • Multicultural Plaza: an open-air space where exhibitions, films, plays, etc. are held.
  • Regional Spirits Interpretation Centre.
  • Chapel: place where several municipal services are located, such as the Youth Centre, Guadalinfo, Community Social Services and Cazalla's simulated company.
  • Cloister: current marketplace and future cultural area.
  • Church: converted into an Auditorium where concerts, plays and public events are held.
