Gilena Museum Collection

This museum offers an anthropological discourse on the history of the town through the exhibition of a variety of archaeological artefacts. The so-called "archeodromes" are two very attractive spaces, where historical reconstruction and experimental archaeology activities are held.

The Gilena Museum Collection was made possible by the heirs of the artist Francisco Maireles Vela and the strong support of the municipality. The upper floor of the town's Multipurpose Building houses the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The layout of the permanent collection offers two itineraries: the first and most extensive is the artistic itinerary focusing on the figure of Francisco Maireles, with more than 86 works in the collection, including Nuns in Piazza della Minerva, a magnificent oil painting from the artist's red period produced while he was living in Rome. This room also features works by other great artists such as Carmen Jiménez, B. Romero Ressendi, Bertrand Boyer and J. Polo.

The second itinerary is of an archaeological nature and displays, in a meticulous and attractive exhibition, numerous pieces from the municipal district that show the role that women and men have played over time, the importance of food, work, traditions and customs, as well as the environment in which human beings have evolved.

It offers educational activities, workshops, guided tours and temporary exhibitions once a month.
