Wines and spirits in the province of Seville: a pleasure for all the senses

The province of Seville has an important wine tradition based, mainly, on the production of white wines, grape juices, brandies and liquors. The rich heritage and the beauty of the unique natural landscapes of the province of Seville combine with its unique gastronomy and wine production to create an unbeatable tourist destination.

The province of Seville is a fertile land that has promoted the cultivation of a great variety of products since ancient times. As part of one of the Roman provinces, its gastronomy and its wines are the result of what the climate, the soil, the varieties used and the human action have achieved since previous times. It is also a fundamental pillar of the tourist offer of our territory, which, since time immemorial, has been reminiscent of wine, moonshine and liquors that have not only survived the passing of the centuries and the many civilisations that have lived here, but have also been enriched by the many cultures that have made their contribution to the alchemy of the vine.

As a result of this heritage, the cultivation of vines and the production of good wines has spread throughout Seville. That is why we propose a detailed tour of the wine-producing areas of the province of Seville. Four regions, Aljarafe, Sierra Morena, Guadalquivir-Doñana and Campiña Sevillana, which are distinguished by their orography, their vineyards, their noble vines of different types of grapes and, of course, their wines, signs of identity of the towns that make up a province full of nuances.

THE SEVILLIAN COUNTRYSIDE

The movement of ancient civilisations across its extensive plains left as a legacy the cultivation of olive groves, cereals and orchards with an important raw material used in its rich gastronomy. A considerable number of distilleries have survived in the countryside, many of them with centenary stills, creating a unique area for cultivating and producing wines and liquors.

Starting with a visit to the town of Alcalá de Guadaíra you can visit the Bodegas Puerta Marisma which, after welcoming the visitors, hold a wine tasting in the main building and explains the production process of its red and white wines before offering a tasting of the wine directly from the tanks.

If you move on to Carmona, you will find the oldest distillery in Andalusia, Anís Los Hermanos - Puerto de Indias, which still to this day continues to produce anisettes and liquors using the most traditional and natural methods. Three types of visits are offered. The first one includes a visit to the distillery, the Arab mill and the Roman baths, where the traditional distillation of anisette is explained and where the products can be tasted. The second one also includes a tasting of 5 distillates led by an oenologist, after which you will try typical tapas from Carmona paired with wines from the province. You also have the chance of turning into a distiller for one day participating in the production, bottling and labelling of an anisette distillation.

If you leave Carmona and go to Fuentes de Andalucía, Destilería Rigo has been producing its wide range of products with care and professionalism for 65 years, explaining to their visitors the story of the distillery and the traditional way in which they produce their anisettes and liquors.
