The Via Crucis of Italica

The Via Crucis of Italica dates back to the first Saturday of Lent in 1990, when the Hermandad del Rosario (Brotherhood of the Rosary) followed this Way of the Cross alone for the first time and decided to share this unique experience with other nearby brotherhoods. Although there are no known Christian martyrdoms in the city, the amphitheatre of Italica symbolises those that took place in the great Roman Coliseum, making the artistic and sculptural environment in which the event takes the only one of its kind in the country.

Intended as a pious, spiritual and meditative act of a religious nature, it is attended every year by fourteen Brotherhoods and a large number of groups and individuals of all kinds who come every year without failure, attracted by the spiritual and sensory aspects of the event.

Entering the archaeological site, the procession moves along the Cardo Máximo, the main street of the imperial city of Italica, as far as the esplanade and then through the alleyway leading to the amphitheatre, making its entrance into the arena of the Roman forum.

Once inside the amphitheatre, which has magnificent acoustics, from one of the vomitoriums of the stands, a splendid choir sings Lenten songs to welcome the Sacred Image of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (Our Father Jesus of Nazareth) to the amphitheatre, thus beginning the staging of the Passion of the Lord.
