Cascadas del Hueznar

Seville enchants

Named by experts as "the little cathedral of the Sierra Sur" and declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, this is a remarkable building erected between 1506 and 1730 over the ruins of a medieval church. It has three limestone naves with high vaults supported by columns.

The Nuestra Señora de las Nieves Parish Church is a noteworthy temple that began to be built in the early 14th century. A façade-tower and a magnificent Gothic main altarpiece from around 1500 was added in the third quarter of the 16th century.

The imposing Gothic castle of Cote was built at the end of the 13th century by order of Alfonso X, and handed over, together with Morón, to the military order of Alcántara in 1297, which led to the creation of commandery in the area.

In the 8th century, when Gerena had already been conquered, the church was built from the tower (altar area) towards the door of forgiveness. Moors were involved in its construction, which is why the arches that separate the two parts of the church are of Mudejar style and the roof is a wooden coffered ceiling. The main altar was also built at that time.

Declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2001

The Santa María la Mayor Church is also home to Estepa’s Museum of Sacred Art, located on the Cerro de San Cristobal.

The Church sits inside the walled compound of Estepa Castle, next to the Santa Clara and San Francisco convents.

This church, consisting of a nave and two aisles, was completed in 1510 in a simple Gothic style with a few Mudéjar elements. Three chapels were added later in the 16th and 17th centuries. The entire church is vaulted. The underground passages that run the length of the church converge on an underground crypt that might have been a Christian refuge during the Moorish rule.

Originally a 15th-century Gothic building, the appearance was significantly altered in the 17th and 18th centuries to become a baroque-neoclassical Church. The central nave is covered with a barrel vault with lunettes, the side naves with a groin vault and the presbytery by a dome on pendentives.
