Built over the ruins of the Castle, it now houses the town’s municipal offices. This 14th-century Castle in Almadén de la Plata was built over the remains of a 1st-century AD Roman fort. It has been argued that the fort was built to protect a mine situated where the Santa María de Gracia Church now stands. That may be why, unlike other castles, this one was not built at the “highest point” in town.

In the 18th century, part of the Castle’s remains were used to build the Municipal Granary to store grain. In the 20th century, part of the land where the Castle stands was divided and sold to build private homes. Hence, much of the Castle was lost. In 1997, what was left of the Castle that was still municipal property was renovated to build the current Town Hall.

The building was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1985 by the Regional Ministry of Culture of the Andalusian Government.
