Aznalcázar Pine Groves

The Pinares de Aznalcázar is one of Seville’s forest areas with the highest ecological interest.

Given its geographical location close to the Guadalquivir marshes, its large area distributed between the municipalities of Aznalcázar and Puebla del Río in the southern half of Seville, its great variety of ecosystems, and its dense tree mass, this is an ideal “spot” for a wide variety of species to thrive.

It is also strategically located next to Doñana National Park. It is bordered to the southwest by the River Guadiamar and crossed by the Majalberraque stream. The rice fields next to the Brazo de la Torre provide food for many species, making this area a mandatory stopover for migrating birds. The birds use these habitats as roosting, feeding, nesting and wintering areas. This also highlights the range of the endangered species that live here, including juvenile Iberian Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti) and Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) from Doñana.

Coniferous forests, composed mainly of stone pine, Mediterranean scrub, rockrose, rosemary, heather, among others, and a wide range of perimarine vegetation, bring high landscape value to this forest area. Wetlands and wild olive groves at Dehesa de Abajo are particularly noteworthy in terms of existing ecosystems. They have the added benefit of concentrating hundreds of birds in one place, including flamingos, waterfowl, waders, and the largest colony of white stork in Europe in their natural state nesting on wild olive trees.

There are approximately 205 species of vertebrates in the pine forests, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, which highlights the importance of the fauna. This, together with the plant diversity, provides a snapshot of the wildlife that inhabit this ecological enclave called Pinares de Aznalcázar and Puebla del Río.

While the area is remarkable due to the wildlife, high biodiversity and beauty, its potential scientific, cultural and/or recreational value is equally important; not only for the locals, but also for the Sevillians that visit this area during bank holidays.

Los Pinares has leisure services for visitors, such as barbecues, children’s playgrounds, and others. There is also a campsite where you can stay.

Pinares de Aznalcázar Recreatonal Area

This facility is located only two kilometres from Aznalcázar in the so-called Pinares de Aznalcázar, which is one of Seville’s forest areas with the highest ecological interest. As you walk through this dense forest, we will come across a recreational area equipped with children play area, a walkway, a leisure area and picnic areas. There are also signposted paths, bicycle lanes, American tracks (a training circuit that combines races and several exercise equipment) and equestrian courses.

The pine forests mainly consist of stone pine, along with Mediterranean scrub, rockrose, rosemary, heather and many other species. It has a wide range of perimarine vegetation that give this forest area a high landscape value. This 12,000-hectare area is home to a diverse community of birds, such as colonies of black kites and tawny owls, and, of course, white storks, which can be seen along the route in the treetops.

How to get there. From Aznalcázar, travel towards Pilas, pass two roundabouts, and then look for the sign to the pinewoods. Once in the pinewoods, the recreational area is adequately signposted.
