Quema de Judas

The Quema de Judas is a century-old, controversial Easter tradition that has been declared an Andalusian Festival of National Tourist Interest. It represents the satirical punishment of humankind’s most despicable acts. Corruption and murder, among others, are burnt at the bonfire of justice.

Easter Sunday, and it’s “Judas” tradition, is one of the most important days in Coripe. The procession of the Resurrected Christ, accompanied by gun salutes fired by the locals, marches through a recreation of the Garden of Gethsemane. The “Quema de Judas” takes place at the end of the event, organised by the San Pedro Apóstol Parish Church.

The “Quema de Judas” consists of burning straw-and-rag effigy that usually represents the most unpopular person of the year, or someone noted for their misconduct or bad behaviour. The Judas is brought to the square accompanied by the traditional “cabezudos” and gunmen. Once the effigy is hanging from a fig tree next to the church, the town’s gunmen shoot the image with blank ammunition until it is completely burnt.
