Marchena’s Holy Week is famous for its many traditions. The images, accoutrement and participation of the Confraternities give the Holy Week a powerful appeal.

Saeta Contest

This contest takes place in Marchena in the early spring. Saetas have a long history and tradition in this town. 

In spring, flamenco music is delivered through the saeta. The saeta is an “a capella” form of singing performed by amateur and professional flamenco singers.

Since 1987, it is customary in Lent to celebrate the Exaltation of the Saeta in El Viso. This event is part of the cultural activities that the Town Council organises to promote music and traditions typical of the Holy Week.

This is a free contest where Flamenco and Holy Week traditions come together. It is organized by Alcalá de Guadaíra’s Town Hall Delegation of Major Festivals and Events and in recent years it has become one of the most eagerly awaited occasions prior to Easter.

Today, the Holy Week festival of La Roda is classified as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia and is one of the most prestigious in the region.

Since the year 2000, Guadalcanal can boast about having its Holy Week declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia, the only one with this distinction in the whole of the Sierra Norte of Seville.

Alcalá prides itself in having one of the oldest and unique religious traditions in the entire province. The procession on Maundy Thursday, known as the “madrugá”, includes dramatised scenes of the events on Mount Calvary in which locals and visitors actively participate. This is the essence of Alcalá’s Holy Week. For this, it has been declared an event of National Tourist Interest.
