Las Aguzaderas Castle

This old Muslim fortress is a listed National Monument. The Aguzaderas Castle is located about 3 km from the town of El Coronil.

The Castle has a quadrangular compound with four towers at the corners and two semi-circular ones in the middle of two of its walls. The imposing Homage Tower has two spacious rooms.

This unique building is the only one of its kind that is located in a hollow surrounded by hills to protect a spring that supplied abundant water for the whole area.

The Castle’s name is likely taken comes from the rocks on which it stands.

The Castle was abandoned before the Reconquest. It was rebuilt in 1383 by Ruy Pérez de Esquivel. It has changed hands several times and has been renovated over the centuries. It was abandoned again in the 19th century until it was declared a National Monument in 1927.

This building is typical of the Andalusian medieval military architecture from the 14th and 15th centuries, with a large square compound, corner towers connected by a high curtain wall and a large homage tower.
