Santa María de Las Nieves Church

This church was built in the Mudejar style with a single nave, a wooden roof and a chancel. A side aisle was added during the baroque period, while the tower and the portal date from the 18th century. Highlights inside include valuable works of art, such as paintings and sculptures by artists of the Seville School and magnificent altarpieces, including the high altarpiece that holds the image of the patron saint of Benacazón, Our Lady of the Snow, to whom the church is dedicated. Also worthy of note is the 15th-century sculpture of the Crucified Christ, and the altarpiece in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament from the workshop of Juan Martínez Montañés made in 1618 and renovated in 1632. This altarpiece contains a mid-16th-century statue of the Our Lady of the Pomegranate attributed to the workshop of Roque Balduque.

Although the Benacazón’s main church is a Mudejar building from the 16th century, it has undergone numerous extensions over time, having acquired its current aesthetics and appearance in the 18th century. Painstaking restoration works have been carried out to restore its splendour. The most recent works, which lasted seven months, involved restoring several paintings and polychrome tiles, as well as the original red ochre colour of the façade covered by layers of paint. The intervention also included replacing the main door, undergrounding the external wiring and improving the aesthetic lighting of the façade. The restoration of the exterior was completed on 22 July 2009.
