Torres Las Gemelas

Known as “Las Gemelas”, these towers are the only structure standing of the Purísima Concepción Church that belonged to the former Barefoot Mercedarian Monastery, which was built in the 18th century. Following the secularisation, the property was transferred to the Town Council. The secularised building has undergone continual renovations, including the demolition of the church, except for the main façade.

The towers’ first tier was part of the façade. The upper levels are supported over the first tier that consists of a high base with semi-circular arches in the centre, supported by double pilasters with a plain frieze on the entablature. It is capped with a parapet with skylights in the angles. The second tier has a circular plan and semi-circular arches between flat Solomonic pilasters, followed by an entablature capped with pinnacles. The third tier is cone-shaped with narrow lintelled openings, covered with an octagonal cap and decorated with a cross and a weather vane.
