Concepción Convent

Founded in the early 16th century, this convent has housed a community of Franciscan Conceptionist nuns for centuries. It covers an area of 4,000 square meters, which includes a church and the convent itself.

The exterior façade facing the Paseo del Estatuto has two tall entrances with semi-circular arches framed between austere Tuscan pilasters. The façade is very plain and simple, devoid of any ornamentation. The convent’s enclosure wall maintains the simplicity and austerity of its main façade. The entrance courtyard is accessed by the temple’s two doors. The cloister stands out of all the areas of the convent.

Its Gothic-Mudejar style church has a single nave and a presbytery. Worthy of note are the nave’s wooden ceiling structure, the presbytery’s ribbed vault and the main temple area. The presbytery’s most outstanding features are the 18th-century main altarpiece, which contains interesting images from the end of the previous century, and a side altarpiece with a sculpture of the Crucified Christ from the mid-16th century.
