Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Church

In 1731, a group of boys would walk through the streets singing the rosary “more for childish entertainment than true devotion”. Gradually, more people joined them until the Confraternity of the Servites was founded. The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is the architectural gem of the Confraternity.

It has become a benchmark of Utrera’s baroque style. This beautiful, circular 18th-century church covered by a large dome has chapels between buttresses. The circular nature of the largest church is further highlighted by a pictorial Stations of the Cross that begins and ends at the main altarpiece, with the stations marked by the chapels.

It holds inside paintings and sculptures. Worthy of note are the Christ of the Waters, from the second half of the 16th century, the archangel Saint Michael and a Pietà in the main altar. Even more impressive is the oil painting of Saint Anthony of Padua by Francisco Pacheco from 1599, the year in which his student and son-in-law, Velázquez, was born.

In 1877, Saint Angela of the Cross, founder of the Sisters of the Cross, moved to Utrera where she founded the first filial house of her order, donated by the Marquis of Casa Ulloa, adjoined to the Chapel of Los Dolores, where they continue to live and take care of this church.
