San Andrés Church and Convent of (Mercedarians)

The original Mudejar portal of the Church from the early 16th century remains. The brick building has a Latin cross plan with a single nave covered by a half-barrel vault and lunettes. The temple was founded in 1537 by Gonzalo Jiménez Benjumea as the seat of several chaplaincies. It was converted into the Convent run by Mercedarian sisters circa 1637 thanks to the patronage of the Dukes of Arcos, Rodrigo Ponce de León and Ana de Aragón y Sandoval. The Convent takes its name from the patron saint of the chapel, St Andrew, that already existed in 1530.
