Cascadas del Hueznar

Seville enchants

The Shrine, as it is today, is the result of extensive renovations that started in 1670 and were completed in the 18th century. The building was initially a small quadrifront temple to house the transept. The windows were subsequently closed, and several outbuildings were added to the structure. This small building wraps around the central hall, covered with a dome on squinches.

The original shrine, of which only the chapel remains, was from the 13th century. It was renovated in the 14th century with the addition of the sacristy and the portal. It was later renovated again in the 18th century. It has been restored in 1842, 1861, 1887 and 1920. Despite these works, it has maintained its Mudejar-style.

The Confraternity of El Rocío of Olivares was founded in 1933, an offshoot of the Confraternity of El Rocío in the neighbouring town of Umbrete. However, it was not until the following year, 1934, when the parent organisation, the Confraternity of El Rocío of Almonte, accepted it as an official affiliate, once the Confraternity of Gines had sponsored it.

This recently built traditional building (opened on 13 April 2008) is located at a municipally-owned property known as “La Suerte”, on the outskirts of the town. It houses the image of Our Lady of Miracles, highly revered in Cañada Rosal, whose pilgrimage takes place in May.

The current chapel stands on the same site as the original one, which must have been a modest single-nave Mudejar building, preceded or surrounded by porticoes, and flanked by outbuildings such as the house of the santero and the hostelry, where the people of Cazalla worshipped the Virgen del Monte at least since the mid-sixteenth century.

The Chapel, built between the late 19th century and early 20th century, is located in the village of La Alcornocosa, about 6 km from El Castillo de las Guardas. The festivities in honour of Saint Anthony of Padova take place here in July. The procession of Saint Anthony takes place after the Mass in the Shrine, located in this beautiful enclave surrounded by nature.

This building has a single nave with transversal arches. Hernández Díaz has dated the structure to the first third of the 14th century based on the semi-circular shape of the apse, the moulding on the presbytery’s toral arch and the entranceways.
